How can we understand ourselves and others? We have been trying to comprehend human nature for centuries. Psychology attempts to understand ourselves and others by studying how people think, feel, and act, and why they do so. The Psychology Department curriculum is designed to introduce students to the theories and methods that modern psychologists have developed in their attempts to understand and help people.
Psychology is not the only discipline that attempts to understand people; there are many others, including religion. At Augustana, we are concerned with how the Christian understanding of human nature relates to psychological approaches. One of the unique emphases of the Psychology Department is the attempt to relate psychology and traditional Christianity, attempting to determine when they are in conflict and when they are complementary.
