The aim of Augustana College is to provide an education of enduring worth. By blending the broad learning experiences of the liberal arts with the study of Christian faith, Augustana students are able to personalize their individual and professional goals.
The study of religion is an integral part of a student's development because it deals with a vital dimension of human life. Knowledge of our Christian heritage is important to our understanding of both history and contemporary living. Consequently, the religion student is encouraged to question, explore, and respond creatively to this heritage and to incorporate the ideas discovered into their life.
The philosophy program makes an important contribution to Augustana's Liberal Arts education. It helps students to think clearly and constructively about life's deepest questions while encouraging the integration of religion, science, literature, ethics, and art. All branches of learning were once part of philosophy, and philosophy continues to examine those concepts and assumptions that are foundational to all disciplines. Philosophy explores the nature of beauty, truth, justice, and goodness. It asks such basic questions as, Who am I? Why am I here? Does life have purpose? What things are most worthwhile? Do we act freely if everything is caused? Does God exist? Is morality relative or absolute? Are there limits of human knowledge? What are the legitimate goals of government?
