Studying Off Campus
Psychology students are encouraged to explore Augustana’s study abroad opportunities and other off-campus study programs. There are many opportunities for travel. For example, Augustana is a member of the Upper Midwest Association for Intercultural Education (UMAIE) that offers courses abroad during January interim session. In addition, many students gain practical experience by participating in an off-campus practicum--whether it is in the Sioux Falls area, near the student's home town, or even in another country.
Psychology Practicum
A practicum or internship in psychology is a valuable, exciting, practical learning experience. It gives students a hands-on opportunity to see how the methods and models they have been studying in the classroom actually apply to real people in the real world. Furthermore, such practical experience is very important for students planning to work after graduation in human services fields.
After students have obtained a sufficient psychology background through their coursework, they will be placed in an agency or program where psychology is applied. Selection of a practicum site is based upon the student's background, interests, and goals. The student will work closely with the practicum coordinator to insure a good match. Because of Augustana's location in the city of Sioux Falls, we offer an excellent variety of choices for the practicum. Past internship locations include behavioral health units and other hospital settings, group homes for troubled or impaired youth, public school settings, human resources offices, and various programs for youth and those with mental illness, domestic violence, substance abuse, or other issues.
Should you make a campus visit as a prospective student, be sure to inquire about the practicum. The current practicum coordinator is Dr. Christina DeVita.
