Sociology as a Major at Augustana

The Sociology major consists of thirty-one (31) credit hours of course work (or about ten courses). Five of those courses are required courses that cover the foundational material in Sociology. An understanding of contemporary society, social theory, stratification of peoples and groups, and techniques of doing social science research are the key elements in this package of courses. Critical thinking, problem-solving, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills are embedded in these courses as well.

The remaining courses needed to complete the major are electives. In that sense, each student may tailor his or her program of study to individual interests and/or career goals. Completing the Sociology major and fulfilling the requirement for graduation (taking a diversity of courses throughout the curriculum as part of the liberal arts emphasis at Augustana) offers sound preparation for life-long learning and career preparation. For a complete listing and description of the Sociology courses, refer to the Sociology Course Descriptions listed in this Web Page.
