If cultural sites are identified, the archeologists will need to evaluate each property’s eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Techniques involved in site evaluation normally include systematic collection and subsurface test excavations, sometimes accompanied by geophysical remote sensing and geomorphology. In the case of historic period archeological sites, archival research is also completed. Assessment of architectural sites involves field mapping, photography, and archival research to evaluate structures’ integrity and historic or architectural value. Field and analytical procedures to develop NRHP recommendations are developed in consultation with project sponsors and the SHPO.
