Augustana Observes Annual Community Service Day Saturday
SIOUX FALLS – Saturday, September 27, is Community Service Day for Augustana faculty, staff, and students.
“This is a great time of year when we as a community lift up Augustana’s fundamental value of Service,” says Tracy Riddle, Associate Dean of Students.
Service begins on Thursday, September 25, when members of the Augustana community canvas nearby neighborhoods leaving bags for Saturday’s food drive. The hope is to collect two tons of food.
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, teams of faculty, staff, and students report to 26 different sites throughout the city and work until the projects are completed.
Projects identified as of Monday, September 22:
American Cancer Society: Making hats for cancer patients.
Food Pantry: Food collection.
Avera Prince of Peace: Wash tables and lead bingo with residents.
Berakhah House: Fall yard work.
Bowden Center: Cleanup project at the Pettigrew Museum along with young people from the Center.
Children’s Care Hospital: Mural painting.
Children’s Inn: Create birthday party in a box to give away at the shelter.
Collection Festival: Parking lot at Augustana will be home to collection site for old cell phones, used clothing for children and adults, furniture, women’s hygiene articles. All items will be donated to local agencies.
Family Connection: Fall cleaning and mattress turning.
Furniture Mission: Delivering and collecting furniture.
Glory House: Fall cleaning.
Good Samaritan Village: Lawn work and painting.
HelpLine: Deliver brochures for Holiday Clearing House.
Jazz & Blues Festival: Assist with details of the festival fundraiser.
National MS Society: Fall yard work at six individual’s homes.
Project Linus: Make fleece blankets for children in the hospital. Deliver blankets.
Rape & Domestic Abuse Center: Create a game day for children who receive services at the Center.
Ronald McDonald House/Berakhah House: Make baked goods for these agencies to freeze and use over the next few months.
St. Francis House: Fall yard cleanup.
Second Chance Rescue Center: Walk and bathe puppies and dogs.
South Dakota Festival of Books: Assist with conference.
Special Olympics: Baseball Games at Miracle Field.
Western Heights Apartments: Create treat bags for residents. Deliver and visit with residents.
Women’s History Club: Assist with renovations at downtown facility.
Workers on Wheels: Fall yard work at a variety of client’s homes.
Volunteers of America: Fall lawn work.
