Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is Boe Forum Speaker Today
SIOUX FALLS – The Center for Western Studies at Augustana College today announced Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor as the speaker for The Boe Forum on Public Affairs.
Justice O’Connor’s address begins at 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 24, in the Elmen Center, 2505 S. Grange Avenue. The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are required for admission. All seating is general admission by section.
The Boe Forum on Public Affairs was established by South Dakota Governor Nils Boe and his sisters, Lois Boe Hyslop and Borghild Boe. A trust established by the Boes states: “It is the grantor’s wish that as events occur and/or issues or problems arise which are of current worldwide or national concern and of broad public interest, such issues and events be discussed, reviewed and examined at the Forum by a person or persons singularly knowledgeable, preferably through personal experience, in the subject matter to be presented. The Forum shall not be conducted nor used for political, partisan, or sectarian purposes.”
Born in El Paso, Texas, Justice O’Connor received her BA and LLB from Stanford University. She served as Deputy County Attorney of San Mateo County (California) from 1952-1953, and as a civilian attorney for Quartermaster Market Center in Frankfort, Germany, from 1954-1957.
From 1958-1960, she practiced law in Maryvale, Ariz., and served as Assistant Attorney General of Arizona from 1965-1969. She was appointed to the Arizona State Senate in 1969 and was subsequently re-elected to two, two-year terms. In 1975 she was elected Judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court and served until 1979, when she was appointed to the Arizona Court of Appeals.
President Ronald Reagan nominated her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. She was confirmed by the United States Senate on September 22, 1981, and took her seat September 25, 1981. Justice O’Connor retired from the Supreme Court on January 31, 2006.

BY MAIL: Up to four tickets are available by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to The Center for Western Studies, 2001 S. Summit Avenue, Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD, 57197. Tickets will be mailed.
IN PERSON: Beginning November 12, any available tickets may be obtained at the Center for Western Studies, 2121 S. Summit Avenue, from 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. For questions, call 274-4007.
