SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Department of Performing & Visual Arts at Augustana College announces The Big Music Roll-Out. The Music program kicks off the season with five music events November 3-8. The events include original compositions, a world premiere, intimate recitals and enormous explosions of sound.
Faculty Voice Recital—Tuesday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m. (Kresge Recital Hall)
Dr. Lisa Grevlos will present a Faculty Voice Recital. All of the music being performed was written by members of Augustana College, including the world premiere of “The Colors of Lorraine” by Deanna Wehrspann and Ivan Fuller, inspired by the paintings of Lorraine Sack. The program will also include “Songs of Soulmates” by Christopher Stanichar and “The Powers of the Pawn” by John Pennington. Guest performers include: Christopher and Kristi Stanichar, John Pennington, Deanna Wehrspann and Eric Wassenaar. Cost for the recital is $5 for all adults and free for students K-12.
Faculty percussion and Trumpet Recital—Wednesday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. (Kresge Recital Hall)
The second event features Dr. John Pennington and special guest, Stephen Dunn (associate professor of trumpet at Northern Arizona University). This concert was conceived with the idea of the two performers presenting a program of all new material both composed and arranged by the duo, with the exception of one piece “Awakening” which was commissioned (from composer David Crumb, of Eugene, Oregon). This recital was recorded by the duo and presented this summer at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Amherst, Massachusetts. Original composition from both performers will be presented with music of Piazzola, Bach, and Ravel. Cost for the recital is $5 for all adults and free for students K-12.
Augustana Faculty String Quartet—Thursday, November 5 at 7:30 p.m. (Kresge Recital Hall)
The Augustana Faculty String Quartet features four associate members of the South Dakota Symphony: Christian Zamora (violin), Justyna Lutow (violin), Pei-Ling Lin (viola) and Kathryn Hufnagle (cello). They will be performing works by Haydn, Bartok and Webern. This special recital is free for all audience members.
Augustana Band Fall Concert—Friday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. (Brandon Valley Performing Arts Center)
The Augustana Band Fall Concert will take audiences on a trip around the world as they explore music from Ireland, Italy, Canada and New York City. They will be joined by guest trumpet soloist, Stephen Dunn. Performing in the concert will be the 85-piece Augustana Band, the 45-piece Augustana Wind Ensemble and the 120-piece Augustana College and Community Band. The concert will be conducted by Dr. Bruce Ammann. Cost for the recital is $5 for all adults and free for students K-12.
Augustana Orchestra Concert—Sunday, November 8 at 3:00 p.m. (Brandon Valley Performing Arts Center)
This program will be a completely French program with music by Massanet, Faure, Ravel and Bizet. The highlight of the concert will be the South Dakota premiere of Faure’s incident music for the play “Peleas and Melisande” compiled and edited by the orchestra’s conductor, Dr. Christopher Stanichar. This part of the program will include performances by Julia Bennett, Ivan Fuller, Lisa Grevlos, Rob Oliver and John Pennington. French music contains “amazing colors and harmonics that are seldom heard in this area,” according to Dr. Stanichar. Tickets for this special concert are $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and students.
Tickets for all of these events can be purchased in advance by calling the Augustana Box Office at 605.274.5320 or online at www.augietickets.com.
