Augustana hosting College Art Association Conference and Exhibit
SIOUX FALLS – Augustana is hosting the South Dakota College Art Association (SDCAA) conference November 5-6.
The SDCAA is a consortium of the state’s university and college art faculty, encompassing the fields of studio art, art history, art education, and graphic design. The theme for the 2009 conference is “Studio Practice/Teaching Practice in Art Higher Education.”
The goal of this year’s conference is to facilitate in-depth discussions on current studio, teaching and research practices through open-studio workshops and round table presentations. The keynote speaker is Dr. James Elkins, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Dr. Elkins earned an MFA in painting and a PhD in Art History from the University of Chicago. Known as an engaging speaker and prolific writer, Dr. Elkins has been described as, “perhaps the most brilliant scholar working in his territory today,” and, “perhaps the Anglophone world’s leading concerned citizen regarding art criticism.”
In conjunction with the conference, the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery invited all participating art faculty members to submit an example of their recent work to produce a showcase of the current art practices sustained by South Dakota’s institutions of higher education. Currently on display, the exhibit runs through November 6 with a gallery reception set for 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5.
Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 12:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is closed Sunday. The Eide/Dalrymple Gallery is located in the Center for Visual Arts on the Commons Circle off 30th Street and Grange Avenue.
