SIOUX FALLS, SD –The Northlanders Jazz Band will perform Monday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Recital Hall as part of Augustana’s 2010 Jazz on the Upper Great Plains Festival. A pre-festival recital will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 7.
The 19-member jazz ensemble under the direction of Dr. Paul Schilf will perform as part the festival. This year the featured artists include Selmer saxophone recording artist, Mr. David Bixler, and vibraphonist, Ted Piltzecker.
The two-day festival will feature more than 45 high school and middle school bands. These bands will perform Monday afternoon and throughout the day on Tuesday. The bands are adjudicated and provided workshops by the guest artists, Dr. Schilf, and other Augustana faculty.
The pre-festival recital on Sunday, March 7, features Ted Pitzecker, a jazz vibraphone soloist. He will be joined by Christian Zamora, violin; Kathryn Hufnagle, violoncello; Mike Andersen, bass; Dave Olson, piano; and John Pennington, drums.
Pitzecker grew up in Fair Lawn, N.J., and received his bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Eastman and Manhattan School of Music. He toured internationally with George Shearing, performed as a soloist for Affiliate Artists, traveled throughout the United States and Canada with his jazz duo, and currently records with his quartet in the United States and Europe.
He wrote Bus for the jazz ensemble conducted by Chuck Mangione, and his works have been aired in National Public Radio’s Performance Today and the Canadian Broadcasting Company’s Arts National. He is currently the mallet instrument chairperson for the International Association of Jazz Educators and a guest-teaching artist at the University of Michigan.
Pitzecker appears as a featured soloist in percussion festivals around the world, from Hannover’s Deutsches Percussion Symposium and London’s Percussive Arts Society (UK), to Brazil’s Ritmos da Terra.
2010 marks the 36th anniversary of the Jazz on the Upper Great Plains Festival and the ninth year under Schilf’s direction.
The Northlanders Jazz Band was started in 1954 with Earl Colgan as its first student director. It continued as a student-run organization until Dr. Harold Krueger assumed its leadership in 1965. The Jazz festival was started under Krueger’s leadership in 1974. Since then, the Jazz Band has performed for many campus, community and regional events. During the past six years, Dr. Schilf and the Northlanders Jazz Band have commissioned seven big band jazz charts. This new jazz music is available through Sierra Publications, Doug Beach Music, and Kendor Music.
