Augustana Theatre Season Concludes with Metamorphoses
SIOUX FALLS – Augustana’s 2009-10 theatre season concludes with the production of Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses. It is also the last production to be directed by Dr. Julia Bennett, who is retiring after 21 years at Augustana.
The award-winning Metamorphoses has been described as a “must see” that explores the depths of grief and loss and is based on Ovid’s classic narrative poem, with familiar characters from Greek mythology including Zeus, Orpheus and Eurydice, Apollo, and Aphrodite. Despite its roots in mythology, however, it uses contemporary language and a modern set.
Performances at the Edith Mortenson Center theatre begin at 7:30 p.m. April 22-24, and April 29-May 1. The performance on Thursday, April 22, is interpreted for the deaf and hard of hearing. Tickets are available at www.augietickets.com or by calling the Augustana Box Office at 605.274.5320.
This mix of classic and contemporary allows the production to truly speak to the audience about the universality of grief. Metamorphoses uses Ovid’s myths to provide us with those transformative moments when we open our eyes and take in the magnitude of the human condition, and prompts the audience members to rethink their understanding of death not as a loss, but rather as a transformation.
