The Northlander's Jazz Band is a 19-member ensemble under the direction of Dr. Paul Schilf. The Band was founded in 1954 with Earl Colgan as its first student director and continued as a student-run organization until Dr. Harold Krueger assumed its leadership in 1965. During the past 10 years, Schilf and the Band have commissioned seven big band jazz charts. This new jazz music is available through Sierra Music Publications, Doug Beach Music, and Kendor Music.
The All-City Middle School Jazz Band began more than 13 years ago and gathers once a year for this special concert featuring the very best of Sioux Falls student jazz musicians. The group is sponsored by the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society. The group is conducted by Mark Isackson.
Selections to be performed include "Mexican Jumping Beans" by Mario Cruz, and two Thad Jones numbers, "Groove Merchant" and "Greetings and Salutations."
