May 1: Northlanders, Jazz Lab in Concert
The Department of Performing & Visual Arts at Augustana will present a May Day concert featuring the Northlanders Jazz Band and the Augustana Jazz Lab beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, in Kresge Recital Hall. Tickets are $5 for all adults and are free for students K-12 and those with an Augustana ID. Tickets are available at www.augietickets.com.
The Northlanders Jazz Band will perform "Country Road," by Taffy Nivert and Bill Danoff, arr. by Maynard Ferguson; "Mack The Kinfe," by Kert Weil, arr. by Shaun Byrne; "It’s Only A Paper Moon," by Harold Arlen, arr. by Myles Collins; "I Get A Kick Out of You," by Cole Porter, arr. by Neal Hefti; and "Outrageous Mother," by Phil Wilson.
The Northlanders have performed on the main stage at JazzFest since 2009. The group was founded in 1954 as a student-run organization. In 1965, Dr. Harold Krueger assumed leadership. Since then, the Jazz Band has performed for many campus and community events and has accompanied numerous guest soloists in the annual Jazz on the Upper Great Plains Festival. The current director of Northlanders is Dr. Paul Schilf, now in his 12th year as director of the band.
The Augustana Jazz Lab, under the direction of Mark Isackson, will perform works including "Easy Street," by Jay Chattaway; "SoCal Samba," by Les Sabina; "Back and Forth" by Jon Phelps; and others.
