Augustana's Diversity and Inclusion Office and the Chabad Jewish Center of South Dakota welcome speakers Ms. Bea Karp (Nebraska) and Dr. Moshe Avital (New York) to campus on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Hamre Recital Hall (formerly Kresge Recital Hall).

  • Ms. Beatrice Karp was born in Lauterbach, Germany, in 1932. She witnessed Kristallnacht (the Night of Broken Glass) in Germany. During the Holocaust, Bea suffered at a forced labor camp; her parents died in Auschwitz.
  • Dr. Moshe Avital was born in Bilke, Czechoslovakia, in 1928. He was deported to Auschwitz at age 14 where his family was killed. Avital was liberated from Buchenwald by the American Third Army on April 11, 1945. After the Holocaust, Avital fought in Israel's War of Independence.
