Another music camp is taking place at Augustana in July featuring the rhythmic sounds of jazz.
The Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues has partnered with Augustana to create the JazzFest Jazz Camp, taking place July 14-18. This camp is an opportunity for students in grades 7-12 who are passionate about jazz to practice, learn and perform with their peers while being taught by Augustana faculty and student counselors.
JazzFest Jazz Camp encompasses auditions for band placements and a day-to-day schedule of jazz band rehearsals, practices, classes such as “Jazz Theory,” “Jazz History,” “Jazz Improvisation,” and private lessons.
Augustana's Dr. Paul Schilf has served as director of the camp for the past four years. Schilf, Mark Isackson, assistant director of jazz at Augustana, and Jim McKinney, former director of bands at the University of South Dakota, will conduct and teach classes. Schilf will direct Big Band I (the upper-level musicians) and Isackson and McKinney will co-direct Big Band II.
This year, Jazz Camp’s guest artist is nationally known jazz and classical trumpeter Allen Vizzutti, who has performed on more than 100 motion picture sound tracks, as well as countless TV shows, commercials, and recordings. He is currently the Artist in Residence at the University of South Carolina.
The Jazz Camp Grand Finale Concert will be performed at Yankton Trail Park during JazzFest on Saturday, July 18. JazzFest is the largest jazz festival in the upper Midwest with more than 100,000 people in attendance over the free, three-day event.
