Veterans' Educational Benefits

All degree programs offered by Augustana College are approved for Veterans benefits under Title 38, U.S. Code in accordance with CFR 21.4253 and 21.4254. A Certifying Official, is available to assist you in the application process. Contact Brenda Murtha at (605) 274-5216.

Enrollment Verification

Admission

Complete an application for regular student status and submit it to the Admission Office.

  • Selection of a program of study (major) is required for veterans' benefits.
  • Submit a copy of your high school transcripts to Registrar's Office.
  • Submit college transcripts to Registrar's Office if applicable. Transcripts must be sent directly from previous institution(s) to Registrar. (No exceptions)
  • Take placement tests as required.

Registration

Students who have received a letter of admission will be eligible for registration. Upon admission to Augustana College, student will be assigned to an Advisor who will assist in planning of class schedule based upon the students declared major or course of study.

Program Selection

  • Veterans receiving VA benefits may select any program leading to a degree offered at Augustana College upon approval from the Veterans' Services Office. Only one program may be pursued under certification for benefits. If the veteran decides to major in two programs at the same time, only on will be certified. The VA will not pay for courses that were taken under an unapproved program after the approved program is completed.
  • Veterans' may receive VA benefits for a second degree and for courses taken after completion of a first degree providing veteran is eligible for additional benefits.
  • Veterans may change a program of study and continue to receive benefits if VA approves the new program.

Class Attendance

  • The VA requires veterans receiving benefits to attend all scheduled class meetings. Failure to do so may result in the loss of benefits and pay back of veterans benefits already received for the semester in question.
  • Student will read and understand student overpayment requirements. Once student has understanding of obligation student will need to verify understanding with signature.

Payments

The first check should arrive SIX TO EIGHT WEEKS after the first day of classes or later if the veteran should apply for certification after classes begin. Payment will likely be delayed if student makes changes to enrollment during semester. Information about qualifying pay rates and payment dates for Chapters 30, 1606, 35, and 31 are available only through direct contact between the student and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Certification Using Veterans' Standard Of Progress

Veteran' Services will not pay educational benefits if one of the following should occur:

  • The veteran registers for classes that are not specified as necessary for the declared program of study. Depending on circumstances, deficiency or remedial courses, may be certified for benefits.
  • The veteran fails to submit all previous college transcripts for evaluation.
  • The veteran registers for two or more courses and receives "F" or "U" grades for all courses for one semester.
  • The veteran fails to convert an "I" grade to a letter grade within one year from receipt of the "I" Grade.
  • The veteran fails to attend class for the semester VA benefits are received.
  • The veteran fails to achieve the minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for two consecutive semesters or sessions.

Additional Available Benefits

Tutorial Assistance

A veteran is eligible to receive up to $600 in $100 increments for tutorial assistance if approved by Veterans' Services. Exception to this is Chapter 1606 who will not be paid for receiving tutorial assistance.

Work-Study

The Work-Study program allows a VA student to earn the Federal or state minimum wage (whichever is higher) for up to 1,300 hours per year (25 hours per week). The benefit is tax-free and allows each VA student to "earn while he/she learns" while pursuing an approved post-secondary program of education at a minimum of three-quarter time basis.

The VA Work-Study student may only perform VA related work. This work might include preparing and processing VA enrollment certifications, checking VA student attendance records or checking or course changes.

Entitlement To Benefits

Augustana College will certify student enrollment in all cases. However, as of August 1, 2002, members that are active duty (Chapter 30) or guard/reserve (Chapter 1606) are required to verify individual enrollment. Any questions or concerns in this matter can be directed to the campus veteran's office.

Direct Deposit

EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) processing, also know as "Direct Deposit" is now available to recipients of several for the VA education benefit programs. To find out if you can us "Direct Deposit", please see your campus veterans representative.

Veterans Educational Benefits

The following must be submitted for the certification process to begin. NO forms will be accepted individually. It is the veteran's responsibility to assemble all needed materials and submit them to the Veterans' Services/ Financial Aid Office.

Applicants under chapter 30

  1. New applicants need to complete VA Form 22-1990 or,
  2. If a transfer student must complete VA Form 22-1995.
  3. Submit copies of the following:
    • DD 214-Report of Separation
    • Kicker documentation
    • VA Form 2366 GI Bill Eligibility Form
    • Student Registration Form and obtain academic advisement from student advisor
    • Arrangements for payment of tuition

  1. New applicants need to complete VA Form 22-1990 or,
  2. If a transfer student must complete VA Form 22-1995.
  3. Submit copies of the following:
    • DD 214-Report of Separation
    • Kicker documentation
    • DD 2384-NOBE (Notice of Benefit Eligibility)
    • T/A Tuition Assistance (If eligible)
    • Student Registration Form and obtain academic advisement from student advisor
    • Arrangments for payment of tuition

  1. Contact the Regional Office in Sioux Falls to begin paperwork
  2. Upon contacting the Regional Office, student will be cleared for registration
