Highlights, Special Features and Opportunities
Take advantage of opportunities to spend one-on-one time with professors, attend workshops with sign language interpreters and practice your ASL skills at events on campus.
The Deaf Awareness organization promotes awareness of deafness on campus and in the community by introducing people to deafness and Deaf culture through social activities and community service.
Burst of Sign:
Augustana Deaf Awareness presents “Burst of Sign" a movie and Broadway-themed show featuring songs, skits, jokes, and stories in American Sign Language. The entire show is interpreted so everyone can enjoy it regardless of signing ability. The event is held every spring at Kresge Recital Hall.
ASL Open House:
Once a month, typically the third Thursday evening, the ASL programs at Augustana host an ASL Open house in which we invite the local Deaf and interpreting community to our ASL Lab for fellowship, food, and games. This is a terrific way for our students to interact with community members and practice their ASL skills.
Every two years, Augustana hosts the ASL Immersion to provide professional development opportunities to American Sign Language students and professionals. The collaboration of various stakeholders in the field at this conference allows for the sharing of expertise and information regarding current best practices.
