Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993

Augustana will grant an employee a minimum of 12 weeks of unpaid leave in any 12-month period to care for a newborn or newly adopted child, to care for a seriously ill family member, or for the employee's own serious illness.

An employee may elect to use any paid vacation leave or paid sick leave as part or all of the leave period. Sick leave accumulation must be used first; then, up to four (4), six (6) week periods per year are available.

Augustana will return the employee to the same or an equivalent position if the employee returns after the leave. If the employee does return to work, the employee cannot lose any benefits accrued before the period of leave. Employees who are among the 10% highest paid can be denied job restoration if the absence will cause economic injury to the operations of the College.

Health care coverage will be continued to the employee during the leave. If the absence is paid, the employee's contribution will be deducted as normal. If the absence is unpaid, the employee's contribution must be paid directly to the College.

Augustana is not required to grant this leave to an employee with less than 12 months of service or an employee who worked less than 1,250 hours in the previous 12 months. Please contact Human Resources for further details.
