Professional Development

It is expected that the administrators of Augustana College will seek to improve their skills in their particular specialty. In support of this expectation, the following provisions will apply:

1. Attendance at appropriate professional meetings will be granted subject to the approval of the appropriate Vice President or supervisor. The College will pay the expenses for administrators as funds allow.

2. Leave of absence without pay for educational development, research, or service in a professional organization may be granted by the Board of Regents upon the recommendations of the appropriate Vice President, and the President of the College. There are no minimum length of service requirements.

3. Leave of absence with one-half salary for the leave period for educational development, research, or service in a professional organization may be granted by the Board of Regents upon the recommendations of the appropriate Vice President and President of the College after three years of service.

4. Leave of absence with 75% salary for full year leaves, and 100% salary for 1/2 year leaves for educational development leading to an advanced degree, research in the administrator's field, or service with a professional organization may be granted by the Board of Regents upon the recommendations of the appropriate Vice President and President of the College after completion of six years of service. These leaves shall in no instance extend beyond one year in length without prior approval.

It is required that the administrator return to the College for a minimum of one year of service after the leave of absence for which salary is granted. If the administrator fails to fulfill this obligation, he or she must return the salary granted during the leave to the College within six (6) months of leave completion.

All leaves of absence, whether with or without pay, must be requested in writing from the appropriate Vice President or supervisor by October 15 of the year preceding the year in which the leave is to be taken. By December 15 the applicant will be informed of the Vice-Presidential and Presidential recommendations that will be forwarded for action at the February meeting of the Board of Regents prior to the issuance of the following year's letter of appointment, setting out the specific terms of the leave. If the leave of absence is granted and taken the administrator will normally not be eligible for another paid leave until six more years of service are completed.

Leaves of absence will normally guarantee the administrator his or her job at the end of the leave period. The Vice President or supervisor in charge will take the necessary steps to shift the work load or secure temporary help during the leave period. Any employee granted a paid leave will continue under the College's benefit programs.
