WWW Publishing Guidelines - Clubs and Organizations
Definition
Clubs/Organizations such as Le Cercle Français, The Augustana Mirror, collaborative working sites, or the Augustana
Student Association; and any other Augustana entities may create pages that
reflect
the individual "personality"
of the group. These pages will be designed, created, and maintained
at the direction of the individual department/unit/organization in accordance
with the following:
Requirements
- contact name and e-mail address of the individual responsible for the information
on each main section or web site
- a link to the Augustana Home Page on the main page
- compliance with current copyright law
- all Augustana College identifier graphics (those pertaining to the College,
not necessarily the club or organization) must come from the Augustana College Images for Electronic Publications,
unless prior permission has been obtained from Public Relations for use
of
other identifiers.
Recommendations
- list of members or participants in the group, especially group officers
- the date the page was last updated on each page/document
- compliance with
the HTML 4.0 standard (transitional) as verified by a validation service
-
Use relative URLs for internal links when constructing pages. Transferring
sites/pages is much easier with relative URLs because it isn't necessary
to change every link within a site/page.
- Check the pages with a variety of computers and browsers. Colors vary
from PC to Macs, as well as on different monitors.
-
As a rule of thumb, try to keep the total size of a page/document including
images under 60kb. Slow connections due to modems or congestion on
the Internet make it frustrating to wait for a large page to load.
-
If information already exists in another page on the Augustana site, consider
linking to that page rather than re-typing the information. The fewer
places information has to be changed, the less likely there will be conflicting
information on the site.
- include a copyright statement
Server
Clubs and organization sites will be located on either
student.augie.edu or faculty.augie.edu - whichever is most appropriate for the
specific group.
Sites
may
reside
on
an alternative server if
agreed
to
by the college WWW coordinator and/or Webmaster.
