Hoax virus messages

If you receive or have a virus...

...and you have updated anti-virus software installed:

Your anti-virus software should quarantine the virus. If the virus is quarantined successfully delete the email or file which contains the virus on your computer.

Make sure you keep updated emergency boot disks should your anti-virus software fail to detect a new virus. You may still lose files because of the virus but the boot disks will help you recover your computer.

...and you have no anti-virus software installed:

Depending on the virus you receive one of the following things may work:

> Download Norton Anti-Virus from Augie (free for on campus use) by clicking here. After installing Norton, update the virus definitions and run a full system scan.

or

> Go to Symantec's online virus scanner by clicking here. Follow the instructions on Symantec's site.

> If niether of those things work, call the Help Desk at 5331.

Caution: Many files that are available on P2P networks such as KaZaA are virus's.

Caution: Emails that say "You may have a virus! Delete this* file!" are often hoaxes. DO NOT delete any files on your system.

*this: Filename varies depending on the email you receive.
