Purpose
The purpose of the Augustana
Library Associates is to be a support group for the Mikkelsen Library.
The Library Associates will strengthen the financial base of the library
to promote the expansion of library holdings and services and to enhance
opportunities for academic excellence. Additionally, the Library Associates
will provide a program of cultural events and continuing education
for the benefit of members, the college and the community.
Membership
The Augustana Library Associates
has a membership of more than 500. Members of Library Associates receive
discounted admission to Library Associates events as well as library
privileges. A membership/library card will be issued upon request.
This entitles the holder to the regular four-week loan period for
books, CDs, and government documents. Videos and DVDs are loaned for
7 days. Members may also request up to 10 interlibrary loans during
the membership year.
Book Club Research
Service - When it's your turn to lead the discussion for your
book club, the library staff would like to help. As a special service
for members of Library Associates, the library staff will prepare
a packet of information about the book and author you are reading.
Simply contact Jan
Brue Enright or Lisa
Brunick at 274-4921. The packets will be ready within 2 working
days (Monday-Friday).

"Above all, a library creates a community,
a sense of being part of a happy band of fellow-seekers after knowledge."
John Stonehouse, entomologist
and research associate, London's Imperial College, champions the library
as a place; a place to research independently, a place to find assistance
in navigating the information maze, a place to study together, or a
place to read and reflect quietly.
Originally constructed
in 1954 and doubled in 1980 with a three-story addition,
Augustana's Mikkelsen Library is in need of a renovation to enhance
library services by
increasing the visibility of staff, revamping reference, increasing
shelving and space for
collections, enlarging the media center, improving classroom space
for library
instruction, creating areas for faculty research, and rewiring for
expanded electrical and
telecommunication access. New carpet, fresh paint, new and updated
bathrooms, and
additional seating will be wonderful enhancements. The plan is to
renovate in stages so
that the library can remain open to its users throughout the project.
The Augie library plays
a critical role in supporting and encouraging the learning process
and promoting information literacy. Students and faculty are faced
with an information
environment that continues to increase in quantity and complexity.
A clean, light-filled
setting with comfortable chairs, ready access to computers, and a
helpful staff will inspire students and faculty to come and spend
time engaged in studying and research.
