Title: Leaving New York (Never Easy)
By: Robert Wayne Ruf
Media: Oil on extruded polystyrene panel
Dimensions: 48" x 96"
Date: October 2006 |
About this painting:
Theme: I was stationed aboard the USS Ainsworth (FFT-1090) from 1990-1994. The ship was home-ported in Staten Island from 1992-1994. When the ship got underway for a mission, I would stand on the deck and watch the New York skyline fade. I worried about the safety of my wife and granddaughter during my time at sea. Leaving them alone in such a big city weighed heavy on my mind. This painting expresses those ambiguous feelings in a vague yet colorful fashion. I would describe the style as ultra-impressionist.
Series: This painting is #4 in the Paradigm Shift series.
Purpose: The Paradigm Shift series is a group of large paintings that I began in August 2006. The proceeds from these paintings are intended to fund the renovation of a building in La Reyna, Nicaragua. The building is to be used as an eco-tourist hotel, to bring money into a community of coffee farmers, whose annual income averages $800.00 a year per family. This painting has been donated to the Mikkelsen Library, as an expression of my appreciation for all the great service I've received at this fine library since February 2002. Thanks again!
Gratefully,
Robert W. Ruf
