Assignment 3 - Template
This assignment builds on Assignment #2. Choose 5 sources. Write citations and annotations for each. Decide if the articles support or refute your thesis statement. Place each article under the correct heading. Remember your supporting and refuting evidence are to be as balanced as possible (5 to 5 or 4 to 6). Include all the headings as listed below. Summary
Historically, the emphasis has been on prevention through education and behavioral changes. Treatment focused on the secondary infections associated with AIDS. Current research centers on reducing the virus' ability to reproduce in the body. Some believe this may lead to a vaccine for the virus. Others worry that this emphasis will detract time and money from those suffering with the disease.

Investigative Question
Is the emphasis on research and funding an AIDS vaccine an effective use of the limited funds available for AIDS research?

Thesis Statement
The focus on the discovery of an AIDS vaccine will significantly increase the number of people suffering, with little or no treatment, from the AIDS virus.

Supporting Evidence These documents support or agree with your thesis statement. In this example, the documents might argue for the need to treat all those suffering from AIDS while pursuing educational/behavioral measures to help prevent the spread of the virus and/or the possible negative consequences of an AIDS vaccine.

Cohen, P. (2000, September 16). Killer cure? New Scientist, 135, 6. Retrieved September 16, 2001 from Academic Universe.

This article, written for scientists and medical professionals, highlights new research regarding "t" and "B" cells. Cohen alerts the reader to the possible consequences of an AIDS vaccine. Specifically, that the use of a vaccine may cause the virus to utilize "B" cells to spread the virus throughout the body. The author refers the reader to the source article in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

AuthorLastName, I. (date published). Title of article of second resource. Title of Journal, 1, 6-12.

This is annotation for the second resource.

Refuting Evidence These documents disagree with your thesis statement. In this example, the documents might promote the investment of money and time to the discovery of an AIDS vaccine and the possible positive consequences of this vaccine.

International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). (2000, June). IAVI Backgrounder: The scientific community overwhelmingly  agrees that an AIDS vaccine is possible. Retrieved September 16, 2001 from http://www.iavi.org/pdf/Scientific%20Community%20Agrees.pdf

This organization is "committed to speeding the discovery and distribution of a safe, effective, and accessible AIDS vaccine". This report, posted on the organization's web site, notes that behavioral approaches to fighting the AIDS epidemic have only slowed the spread of the disease around the world. The organization partners with national and international organizations, governments and private foundations to support research leading to the discovery of an AIDS vaccine. The article cites other infectious diseases, such as smallpox, polio, measles and yellow fever, for which a vaccine has greatly reduced the spread of the disease.
