Alumna Named Wyoming Teacher of the Year

GILLETTE, WY– Alice Kuil King, class of 1991, an English teacher at Campbell County High School, has been named the 2009 Teacher of the Year for Campbell County School District and the State of Wyoming Teacher of the Year.

“Mrs. King is an excellent example of an accomplished teacher with 13 years of teaching, many years as the high school coach for speech and debate, and her many community activities,” Campbell County School District Superintendent Richard Strahorn said. “She will represent Campbell County School District well as the Wyoming Teacher of the Year.”

King has a bachelor’s degree in speech communication with an emphasis in English and drama from Augustana. She also holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. She has been with the Campbell County School District since 1993, beginning as a substitute teacher before taking a full-time teaching position in 1995. Her current assignment includes English teacher, head speech and debate coach, and public speaking instructor. Mrs. King has also directed plays and is a member of the Wyoming High School Forensic Association.

King received the 2006 National Forensic League Double Diamond Coach, 2005 Wyoming Speech Coach of the Year, and 2004 Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award.

“I feel extremely honored to be selected by Campbell County School District as I have always strived to connect with my students and find ways to engage their particular style of learning,” King said. “I am surprised and excited to be selected as the Wyoming Teacher of the Year especially as I feel that there are many great educators in this state”.

Mr. Larry Steiger, CCHS principal, states, “Mrs. King is one of the best instructors I have witnessed in my educational career. Her professionalism, knowledge of subject matter, dedication to her profession, and devotion to life-long learning combine to complete an excellent teacher. I am proud of her work with our school”.

Former teacher and colleague Carol Bierbaum commented, “Mrs. King is a wonderful asset to the staff of CCSD; she has consistently fostered a creative and successful teaching style. She models compassionate and supportive relationships with students. Her involvements reflect her professionalism and her willingness to use all her talents.”

Dr. David Fall, CCSD Board of Trustees Chairman added his praise of Mrs. King and her accomplishments. “Mrs. King has come before the board many times with her involvement with the high school speech team. It is a tribute to her and her hard work to be selected as the county and state Teacher of the Year.”
