Linda Avey, class of 1982, was recently recognized by TIME Magazine for her company's invention—the Retail DNA Test. Avey is co-founder of 23andME, which developed the product.
The invention was named TIME Magazine's 2008 Invention of the Year, ranking number one out of 50 inventions mentioned in the magazine, saying it is a pioneer in retail genomics.
The Retail DNA Test uses human saliva to estimate your predisposition for over 90 traits and conditions, identifying and interpreting 600,000 genetic markers.
Avey, who graduated from Augustana with a biology major, worked in the biopharmaceutical industry for 20 years prior to starting 23andMe.
