Dr. Bruce Ammann Elected to ABA Board of Directors

SIOUX FALLS – Dr. Bruce Ammann, Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Augustana College, was elected to the Board of Directors of The American Bandmasters Association (ABA) at the organization’s annual convention March 3-7 in College Station, Texas.

Dr. Ammann will serve a two-year term and is eligible to be elected to one of the National Offices. In March, 1996, he was elected to membership in the ABA, and in March, 1997, received the Phi Beta Mu “Outstanding Bandmaster Award” for the state of South Dakota. In May, 2001, he received the Vernon and Mildred Niebuhr Faculty Excellence Award, the highest award presented to a member of the Augustana College Faculty.

Dr. Ammann served as chair of the Augustana Music Department from 1993 through 1998, and again during the 2001-2002 academic year. Prior to his appointment at Augustana, Dr. Ammann was a faculty member at Arizona State University. He is a founder and principal conductor of the Augustana College/Community Band. The ensemble integrates members of the community with college students and this year has more than 100 musicians.

The ABA is committed to the preservation of American band history. The ABA took true formation at a meeting in Chicago on October 25, 1928. New York was approved as the first meeting place and the charter members assembled there on July 5, 1929. The first annual convention was held March 13-16, 1930, in Middletown, Ohio.
