Sophomore Published in Physics Journal
SIOUX FALLS - Bethany Jochim, a sophomore physics major from Pierre, SD, is the lead author of an article published in the Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics.
Among the co-authors are Augustana alumnae Amy Lueking (2007) and Laura Doshier (2007). The article, “Rapid formation of H3+ from ammonia and methane following 4 MeV proton impact” presents some counterintuitive experimental results about how molecular bonds rearrange as a molecule dissociates.
The work also outlines a theoretical model supporting the experimental results. The article was published as a Fast Track Communication, which the journal defines as an outstanding short paper reporting new and timely developments in the field.
The Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics is published by the Institute of Physics.
The work was supported by the National Science Foundation (award PHY-0653598) and the Chemical Sciences, Geosciences, and Biosciences Division, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, US Department of Energy.
