Augustana, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, host Fire Safety Academy

SIOUX FALLS – On Monday, August 31, Augustana College’s Department of Campus Safety and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue will host the Residence Life Fire Safety Academy.

The four-hour course is designed to familiarize and prepare both student staff and professional residence life staff to address fire related emergencies. This is the first Fire Safety Academy to be held on campus and approximately 60 Augustana College students and professional staff will participate.

Topics include fire safety, fire extinguisher use, evacuating a smoke-filled building, a fire fighter challenge, a high rise rescue conducted by professional fire fighters using a ladder truck, and a mock burn of a dormitory room.

9:00 a.m.

Fire Safety 101, John Wagner, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Fire Inspector, Stavig Hall basement.
10:00 a.m. Fire Extinguisher Training, Stavig Hall basement.
10:30 a.m. Fire Extinguisher hands-on training, basketball court south of Granskou Hall. Participants will utilize various fire extinguishers to put out a real fire.
11:15 a.m. Fire Fighter Challenge, grass area located south of Satvig Hall. Participants will have the opportunity to view equipment utilized by fire fighters, put on the gear, pull a weighted mannequin to safety, and spray an actual fire hose. 
11:30 a.m. Building Evacuation Drill, first floor Stavig Hall. Participants will enter a smoke-filled residence hall floor and conduct a check of the floor while evacuating the building.
12:00 noon High Rescue, Stavig Hall. Participants will observe a high rise rescue in which a volunteer will be rescued from a smoke-filled room on the eighth floor of the building via a Fire Rescue ladder truck.
12:15 p.m. Residence Hall Fire Demostration, basketball court south of Granskou Hall. Participants will observe a controlled fire involving a mock dorm room.
12:45 p.m. Participants will be awarded a certificate, a t-shirt, and have the opportunity to get photographs with the fire equipment and fire fighters.
