Friday, August 21, 2009
SIOUX FALLS – The Augustana College-Community Orchestra is accepting members for the 2009-2010 season.
All orchestral string players are invited to join, including violins, violas, cellos, and basses. Auditions are not required for community string players to play in the orchestra. There is also room for orchestral woodwinds, brass, and percussion on a need basis.
Rehearsals are held Sunday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Humanities Center on the campus of Augustana College. The first rehearsal is Sunday, September 13. The Humanities Center is located on the Commons Circle with access from 30th Street and Grange Avenue.
Augustana’s College-Community Orchestra is open to students and community members who enjoy playing fine orchestral music in a friendly environment. This orchestra, which dates back to the 1920s, allows musicians to continue to hone their talents by playing favorite works of master composers.
The orchestra has been featured in the Argus Leader, and performs in South Dakota’s premier music halls, including the Washington Pavilion in downtown Sioux Falls. Augustana’s Faculty String Quartet coaches sectionals and plays alongside orchestra members.
World-class artists are often featured as soloists with the orchestra. Members have the opportunity to perform the masterworks of the great composers, including Ravel, Debussy, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, and many others, in a fun-filled environment where music is shared among friends.
Dr. Christopher Stanichar, assistant professor of music at Augustana, is in his second year as director.
Musicians interested in joining the Augustana College-Community Orchestra can contact Dr. Stanichar at 605.274.5233.
