Kirkeby-Over Stadium Dedicated

SIOUX FALLS – A large crowd gathered Tuesday, September 1, for the dedication of Kirkeby-Over Stadium, Augustana’s new $11 million football facility.

Bob Preloger, Vice President for Marketing & Communications, served as emcee. Speakers included Dr. Mike Olson, class of 1972 and a former Viking football player; Bill Gross, class of 1973 and the College’s athletic director; Brad Salem, class of 1993 and the Vikings’ head football coach; Augustana President Rob Oliver; Rev. Dr. Richard Swanson, Professor of Religion and chair of the Humanities Division; and Dave Fleck, chair of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce Board.

“These are exciting times,” President Oliver said. He referred not only to the new stadium, but the $7 million renovation of the Mikkelsen Library, the completion of the new Visual Arts Center, improvements being made to residence halls, the hiring of outstanding new faculty for 2009-10, and the future expansion and renovation of Gilbert Science Center.

“As is every day, this is a great day to be an Augustana Viking,” he said.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony the crowd was invited to tour the 6,000-seat stadium.

The first game in the new facility is Saturday, September 5, against Emporia State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Tickets are available at through Friday, September 4.
