Submissions Invited for Claire Donaldson Short Play Festival

SIOUX FALLS – Augustana College and The Great Plains Dramatist Exchange seek submissions for the Claire Donaldson ‘8 in 48’ Short Play Festival.

Submissions will be accepted through May 15, 2010. Eight 10-minute plays will be selected by a national panel and winners will be notified by June 15, 2010. A scholarship and cash prizes are offered.

Winning selections will be mounted during the ‘8 in 48’ Short Play Festival on September 18, 2010, at Augustana. [On Thursday, January 28, this date was corrected to be September 11, 2010.]

The festival was founded in honor of the late Claire M. Donaldson, who graduated from Augustana in 2000. She was passionate about the art of playwriting.

“The ‘8 in 48’ is an outstanding opportunity for us to honor Claire while supporting the development of new short plays,” said Dr. Julia Bennett, Associate Professor of Theatre at Augustana. “Producing eight plays in 48 hours is a challenging and exciting artistic event. Our community loves to see the new works and our students mark it as a highlight in their college careers.”

Augustana alumna Heidi Sue Meyer is the festival coordinator. “As a playwright, I was eager to create a supportive environment for young playwrights in our state,” she said. “The festival continues to offer that possibility.”

All submissions must be previously unproduced, 10 minutes or less in length, and can focus on any topic or genre. Submissions are limited to two per playwright. Submissions by electronic attachment are encouraged.

A call for festival directors, designers, and actors will go out March 1, 2010. All interested individuals are invited to bring their talents to this unique opportunity.
