Dr. Rick Davis, Associate Academic Dean, Dies at Age 52

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Dr. Rick Davis, who had served as Augustana’s Associate Academic Dean since June 2005, died Tuesday, February 16, at Dougherty Hospice House after an eight-month battle with brain cancer.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Spirit of Peace United Church of Christ, 6509 S. Cliff Avenue in Sioux Falls.

Dr. Mark Braun, Augustana’s Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College noted that “as we celebrate Rick’s life and accomplishments, we are mindful that this is a loss not just for the Augustana community, but for higher education in South Dakota.”

Braun observed that before becoming Registrar at SDSU, Davis was Director of Student Activities and of the Student Center at the University of South Dakota, noting that Davis brought to his work a depth of knowledge about student services that is rare for academic administrators. “Rick made every student feel that they were special” Braun stated. “He listened to them and valued their perspectives. Augustana students and faculty alike will miss his attention to detail, his caring manner, and his gentle humor.”

Dr. Davis received a BA in history from the University of Vermont in 1979, and an MA in student personnel administration from Michigan State University in 1981. He earned a doctorate in education administration from The University of South Dakota.

Dr. Davis came to Augustana from South Dakota State University, where he was the Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management and Registrar. In addition, he taught at SDSU, The University of South Dakota, The University of Vermont, and The University of Florida.

At SDSU he coordinated the campus implementation of policy and procedure revisions associated with merging the individual student information databases of all six South Dakota public universities into a single database.

Dr. Davis is survived by his wife, the Rev. Jean Morrow, and daughter, Elizabeth.
