SIOUX FALLS, SD – A graduate program unique to the state and region has been added to Augustana College’s curriculum.
Beginning with the fall 2010 semester, Augustana will be offering a Master of Arts in Sports Administration and Leadership, pending approval of the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
“The new graduate program in Sports Administration and Leadership is an interdepartmental effort that draws from the expertise of a number our excellent professors across the campus,” said Sherry Barkley, chair of the HPER Department. “We’ve worked hard to put together a quality program that will be unique to the state and the region. We’re very excited about the prospect of getting this program up and running.”
The program is designed for those interested in an advanced degree in pursuit of a career in coaching or sports administration. Program content for the 32-credit program includes courses in leadership, research, sports marketing, statistics, public relations, ethics, sport psychology, and sport law.
“We’re very excited about the potential of this program,” said Athletic Director Bill Gross. “Sherry Barkley and a number of other people at the College have worked together to formulate an outstanding graduate program.”
In 2005, the HPER Department added Sports Management as a major. Currently, more than 50 students are enrolled in the program.
