Four Faculty Members Honored During Commencement Ceremony

Four members of Augustana’s faculty were recognized for outstanding achievement at the 2010 commencement ceremony Saturday, May 22, at the Sioux Falls Arena.

Dr. Janet Blank-LibraDr. Janet Blank-Libra (English/journalism) was awarded the Stanley L. Olsen Chair of Moral Values. She has been teaching at Augustana since 1988. The Chair of Moral Values is named in memory of the longtime professor of philosophy at Augustana, who embodied and exemplified in his teaching the spirit the chair seeks to sustain and to promote. The task of the holder of the chair is to provide leadership in the areas of ethics and moral values by challenging the campus community to confront questions of value. The holder of the chair receives a summer stipend and a reduced teaching load during the fall and spring semesters. Dr. Blank-Libra is the ninth faculty member to hold the chair.


Dr. Geoffrey DippleDr. Geoffrey Dipple (history) received the Orin M. Lofthus Distinguished Professorship. Dr. Dipple joined the Augustana faculty in the fall of 1998. The Lofthus Distinguished Professorship was established in 1989 by Dr. Monroe Paulson, class of 1943, and other students of Dr. Lofthus—professor of biology from 1935-1945—to honor his memory and encourage the kind of teaching excellence among today’s Augustana faculty. The three-year appointment carries a $10,000 award. Dr. Dipple is the ninth faculty member to receive this professorship.

 

Dr. Martha GreggDr. Martha Gregg (mathematics) received the Jane and Charles Zaloudek Faculty Research Fellowship. Dr. Gregg came to Augustana in the fall of 2008. The Zaloudek Faculty Research Fellowship was established in 2007 by Jane Hemmel Zaloudek and Dr. Charles Zaloudek to provide an annual fellowship to support research by a member of the Augustana faculty. The purpose of the fellowship is to support with a $5,000 stipend, faculty scholarship that extends the scope of research beyond the normal confines of the classroom. Dr. Gregg is the fourth faculty member to receive this fellowship.

 

Dr. Richard SwansonDr. Richard Swanson (religion/philosophy/classics) received the Frederick C. Kohlmeyer Distinguished Teaching Professorship. He has been teaching at Augustana since 1990. Dr. Kohlmeyer, through a gift to Augustana upon his death in 1990, established this distinguished professorship to recognize and to reward outstanding teaching. The recipient receives a summer stipend of $5,000 for each of the two years of the award. Dr. Swanson is the ninth faculty members to receive this professorship.
