9:45 a.m. SATURDAY UPDATE: Members of Augustana Band Tour Arrive at Cairo Airport

Augustana College this morning announced that 46 student members of the Augustana Band and other Band Tour travelers have arrived at Cairo International Airport. The remaining travelers, whose Delta Airlines flight was cancelled on Friday, have been re-booked and will depart on Tuesday, Feb. 1.

Augustana President Rob Oliver spoke with College officials in Egypt early Saturday morning. As of 9:45 a.m. CST, these are the updates:

  • Students and members of the tour on Delta Flight No. 9428, scheduled to depart at 4:10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30 (8:10 p.m. CST Saturday), have arrived at Cairo International Airport with a security escort. The group made arrangements to arrive at the airport early, before the curfew mandated by the Egyptian government.
  • Students and members of the tour on Delta Flight No. 85, which was scheduled to fly from Cairo to New York on Sunday, Jan. 30, have been re-booked on Delta’s KLM Flight No. 554, scheduled to depart at 4:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1 (8:10 p.m. CST Monday).
  • Cellular and Internet connections in Egypt remain inconsistent. College officials spoke with Band Tour leaders in Cairo late Friday night and early Saturday morning via landline. Band leaders report that all students and tour members are doing well and are in good spirits, despite the conditions. Until their departure this morning, they have remained at the hotel.

The Augustana Band, along with 19 faculty, staff and friends, have been in Egypt since early January on a five-concert tour of the country. On Friday, due to intensifying anti-government protests throughout Egypt, Augustana officials moved students to a different hotel – far away from known areas of protest – and canceled a Band concert scheduled for Friday evening at Mubarak Hall.

“Our Band leadership continues to report that all students are safe and secure. The area around their hotel, which is near the airport, remains calm and quiet,” said Oliver. “We continue to do all we can to ensure that students remain out of harm’s way and that they return home safely and as soon as possible.”

Augustana will provide more updates on its website (www.augie.edu) as they become available.
