1 p.m. SATURDAY UPDATE: Student Groups Departing Cairo Sunday and Feb. 1
Following another phone conversation with Band leaders in Cairo, Egypt, Augustana officials are reporting that members of the Augustana Band and other Band Tour travelers remain in Cairo in anticipation of their scheduled flight home, which has now been re-scheduled to depart at 2:25 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30 (6:25 a.m. CST Sunday). The remaining travelers, whose Delta Airlines flight was cancelled on Friday, have been re-booked and will depart on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
Student travelers in the "King Tut" and “Sphinx” groups are scheduled on Delta Flight No. 9428. This flight has been re-scheduled to depart at 2:25 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30 (6:25 a.m. CST Sunday).
Students and members of the tour's "Cleopatra" group originally scheduled on Delta Flight No. 85 have been re-booked on Delta’s KLM Flight No. 554, scheduled to depart at 4:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1 (8:10 p.m. CST Monday).
The Augustana Band, along with 19 faculty, staff and friends, have been in Egypt since early January on a five-concert tour of the country. On Friday, due to intensifying anti-government protests throughout Egypt, Augustana officials moved students to a different hotel – far away from known areas of protest – and canceled a Band concert scheduled for Friday evening.
“Our Band leadership continues to report that all students are safe and secure. The area around their hotel, which is near the airport, remains calm and quiet,” said Oliver. “We continue to do all we can to ensure that students remain out of harm’s way and that they return home safely and as soon as possible.”
Augustana will provide more updates on its website (www.augie.edu) as they become available. Parents or family members who need additional information can contact Augustana Campus Safety at 605.274.4014
