Ortbahn, Miles Crowned Viking Days 2011 King and Queen

In true Big Apple fashion, Casey Ortbahn and Jackie Miles were crowned King and Queen of Viking Days 2011 during Augustana’s “Late Night Coronation Show” Monday at the Elmen Center.

Both biology majors, Ortbahn is a senior from Pierre, S.D. Miles is a native of Tea, S.D.

Joining Ortbahn and Miles as members of the Royal Court are seniors Dan Bock, Arvada, Colo.; Eric Nyberg, Sioux Falls; Jacob Bury, Sioux Falls; Josh Belville, Van Dyne, Wis.; Ashley Weber, Cold Spring, Minn.; Jessica Haugo, Waubun, Minn.; Heidi Nelson, Custer, S.D.; and Hannah Miller, Mankato, Minn.

The coronation, which was followed by an elaborate outdoor fireworks display, kicks off a week of New York-themed “Viking-State-of-Mind” homecoming activities at Augustana, including:

  • The 58th annual Viking Varieties, the College’s student-led talent show, with shows Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

  • The student-led “Bread for the Apple,” a bake sale and collection drive to raise money for New York City’s Trinity Lutheran Church, a soup kitchen on the lower eastside of Manhattan that serves some 1,000 meals to people in need each week.
  • Words of Art,” an interactive memorial exhibition of written reflections and musings in commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The exhibit is on display in the Siverson Lounge.
  • Eliminating Blindness,” the Augustana Thought Leader Forum featuring Dr. John Berdahl, class of 1999, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
  • Talking to the Masses,” a collection of works by Carrie Ammermann, class of 2004, at Augustana’s Eide/Dalrymple Gallery.
  • The Augustana Orchestra’s debut with rock legends KANSAS at the Washington Pavilion Friday night.
  • Viking Days parade on campus beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
  • The homecoming football game, where the Augustana Vikings will take on Winona State at 1 p.m. at Kirkeby-Over Stadium.
  • Saturday’s Blue and Gold Gala, where the College will honor its 2011 Alumni Achievement Award Winners.
