Rising juniors Amanda Johnson of Sioux Falls; Jessica Johnson of Sioux Falls; Ashley Schmidt of Mitchell; and Ruthellen Tornberg of Harrisburg have been selected to receive the prestigious Sophomore Honors Award.

Dr. Paul Schilf, assistant professor of music, has been named the executive director of the South Dakota Music Education Association. In his new role, Schilf will be responsible for providing leadership and advocacy for music education throughout the state. He will maintain his post at Augustana while serving in this new position.

The students are here through the Augustana-Exeter exchange program, an initiative that sends Augustana anthropology students to England and brings English students to South Dakota.
The College remembers Dr. John VanderWoude Jr., Augustana class of 1974 and a member of the Board of Trustees since 2002, and Gerald (Jerry) Knudson, Augustana class of 1965 and a member of the Board from 2005-2010. Visitation for VanderWoude will be held on Sunday, July 15, and a memorial service is planned for Monday, July 16. Memorial services for Knudson will be announced in the near future.
In his new role, Preloger will be responsible for the College’s Marketing and Communications, Alumni Relations and Fund Raising initiatives. He most recently served as Vice President for Marketing and Communications.
As a kid, Dr. Timothy Sorenson always wanted to be an astronaut. He’ll soon get a chance to experience the next best thing when he flies with the U.S. Navy’s famous flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels, on Wednesday, July 18, as part of the Sioux Falls Airshow 2012.
A research project by senior biology major Carl Hjelmen, senior bio-chem major Nicole Ensz, and Leah McComas, a biology major from the class of 2012, has been recognized by the Biology Division of The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR).
Senior Kelly Wong, a biology and modern foreign languages major from Custer, S.D., is spending her summer as a research intern, studying the effects of neuro-imaging in multiple sclerosis at Massachusetts General Hospital in conjunction with Harvard Medical School. She is one of 69 Augustana students who are conducting scientific and biomedical research and/or internships at facilities throughout the U.S. as part of the College's Summer Research Program.
