The Augustana magazine

Since her founding in 1860, our Augustana has seen many pioneers – men and women committed to passing on knowledge and skills, fostering faith and encouraging exploration and discovery in generations of young men and women who have gone on to serve the world in various capacities.

In this issue of The Augustana, we pay tribute to some of our own pioneers, including the iconic Dr. Sven Froiland, Dr. Greg Schultz ‘74, Dr. Carole Miserendino ‘79, Dr. David Bader ’74, biologist-turned artist Domonique Venzant ’02 and others.

Campus Community Gathers for Annual Christmas Tree Lighting

The Augustana community celebrated the start of the holiday season at the annual "Lighting of the Augustana Christmas Tree" Tuesday night. The event included holiday crafts, photos with Ole and Christmas carols led by members of The Augustana Choir. The event was hosted by SKOL (Students Keeping Ole's Legacy) and the Augustana Advancement Ambassadors. View photos!

Chemistry Students Honored at Regional Meeting

Augustana junior Amanda Johnson and sophomore Eric Habbe won top honors at the American Chemical Society Midwest Regional Meeting, held recently in Omaha, Neb. Twenty Augustana students attended the meeting to present their research and gain professional development skills.

Campus Celebrates International Education Week

Augustana will celebrate the global perspectives and cultural diversity alive on campus during “International Education Week,” Nov. 12-16. Nationally known writer and linguist Deborah Fallows will be on campus Thursday to share lessons on life, love and language.

Newsmakers: 'Book Lovers Settle In to Read ... And Read'

On Saturday, 50 students gathered in the Siverson Lounge to read and enjoy F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" at Augustana's second annual Reading Marathon hosted by the Alpha Xi Mu chapter of Sigma Tau Delta (the international honors society for English majors and minors). Jackie Payne Named Director of Development

Jackie Payne has been named director of development. In her new role, Payne will be responsible for raising private support for the student, faculty and programming needs of the College and for identifying ways to build and foster strong connections between alumni and friends and Augustana.

In the News: Boe Forum speaker sees 'good, ill in digital frontier'

More than 2,000 people filled the Elmen Center last night to hear Jared Cohen, former advisor to Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton, author, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and director of Google Ideas, speak at the 2012 Boe Forum on Public Affairs. Christensen Named South Dakota Librarian of the Year

Kay Christensen, cataloger/government documents librarian at Augustana's Mikkelsen Library, has been named the 2012 South Dakota Library Association’s Librarian of the Year in recognition of her outstanding contributions to affect and improve library service in a South Dakota community, school or university/college.
