Burkart Receives Physics Leadership Award

Audrey Burkart, a junior physics major, has been awarded a $2,000 Society of Physics Students (SPS) Leadership Scholarship for the upcoming 2013-2014 academic year. Recipients of the scholarship must establish high academic performance in physics and overall studies, potential and intention for continued scholastic development in physics, and active participation in SPS programs.

Burkart, a native of Monument, Colo., is the current president of the award-winning Augustana SPS chapter. In addition, she serves as associate councilor for Zone 11 of the national SPS organization, which includes South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota. In November 2012, Burkart represented the 43 chapters in Zone 11 at the SPS national convention in Orlando, Fla.

During her career at Augustana, Burkart has completed summer research experiences at Baylor University and the University of Colorado. In summer 2013, she will be working with Dr. Drew Alton of Augustana College on developing experiments that seek to directly identify the particles thought to comprise Dark Matter.

The Society of Physics Students is a professional association explicitly designed for students. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics. The society helps students develop professionally and contribute to the professional community. Augustana's SPS chapter faculty advisor is Dr. Drew Alton, assistant professor of physics.
