Former Augustana President Lloyd Svendsbye Dies at 83

Former Augustana president Dr. Lloyd Svendsbye died on Sunday, March 2, in Edina, Minn. He was 83.

Svendsbye served the College as its 19th president from 1987-1992.

A native of North Dakota, Svendsbye held degrees from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., and Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He was ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1955 and also earned his doctorate of divinity from Columbia University. Prior to joining Augustana in 1987, he served as president of Luther Northwestern Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., and vice president and Dean of Students at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

"President Svendsbye led and served Augustana with integrity and wisdom during his time in office and continued to support the College through his tireless volunteerism and generous financial gifts," said President Rob Oliver. "We are grateful for the many ways he has impacted Augustana and we send our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends who are mourning his loss."

Following his retirement, he continued to work as an author and genealogical scholar, chronicling his ancestors’ journeys from Norway to Western North Dakota in his book, "I Paid All My Debts." For the past decade, he also served as a member of the Center for Western Studies' National Advisory Council.

His wife, Anne, passed away in 2011.
