AUGUSTANA SOFTBALL

AUGUSTANA (34-13) hosts Morningside College (23-19) Tuesday, April 16, for a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Bowden Field.

THE VIKINGS and the University of Northern Colorado split a doubleheader played Friday, April 12, at Bowden Field.

UNC's Rachel Van Hook was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Bears past the Vikings, 2-0, in the opener. Cristin Dumler shut out the Vikings on five hits. Megan Faris and Jen Jarding each went 2-for-2 for Augie. Amy Klyse went the distance, giving up four hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Tammy Nielsen fired a one-hitter and stroked a grand slam home run to lead the Vikings to a 4-0 win in the night cap. Robyn Beske and Katie Kimball each had a single. Nielsen issued one walk and struck out four. Only three Bears reached base.

AUGUSTANA won four of five games played in the North-South Tournament held Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, at the SYA Riverside Sports Complex in Sioux City, Iowa.

On Saturday, the Vikings lost to North Dakota State University, 6-1, and defeated the University of North Dakota, 7-1, and Saint Cloud State University, 3-1.

In Sunday's play, The Vikings blanked South Dakota State University, 7-0, and Minnesota State University, Mankato, 1-0.

Nielsen recorded a tournament high 25 strikeouts.

Nielsen homered for the Vikings' only run against NDSU. Faris was 2-for-3 with a double. Augie was hit with three errors.

Augie played errorless defense and Nielsen pitched a six-hitter with a dozen strikeouts in the UND win.

Kristin Nagle hit a solo home run and Nielsen went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI as the Vikings avenged an earlier loss to Saint Cloud.

Klyse fired a one-hitter against Mankato. Nagle was 1-for-3 and drove in the only run.

Nielsen shut out SDSU on a three-hitter. Tessa Foth, Faris, and Jarding all hit home runs, while Beske doubled. Jarding drove in three runs, and Foth scored three times.

TESSA FOTH leads Augie hitters with a .338 average. She has five home runs for the season and 25 RBIs. Megan Faris is hitting .333, Kristin Nagle .313, and Bethany Almquist .300. The Vikings are batting .276 as a team.

Amy Klyse has an 18-7 season's record, and Tammy Nielsen 16-6.

HEAD COACH Sandy Jerstad (St. Olaf '66) begins her 26th season at the Vikings' helm. She has compiled a career record of 918-320-2. Her teams have won eight North Central Conference titles, competed in 11 NCAA Division II region tournaments, and won the national title in 1991. Her teams have won 30 or more games each of the last 17 seasons. In 1998 she was named College Women's Coach of the Year by the South Dakota Sportswriters' Association.

With her 918 wins, Jerstad is in second place on the NCAA's all-divisions career softball coaching chart.

AUGUSTANA'S assistant coaches are Jeff Glackler and Jessica Mathys.
