AUGUSTANA SOFTBALL

AUGUSTANA (36-13) hosts the University of South Dakota (18-27) in a doubleheader today, April 17, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Bowden Field.

THE VIKINGS ran their current win string to six by sweeping a doubleheader with Morningside College on Tuesday at Bowden Field.

Tessa Foth unloaded her sixth home run of the season, smacked a double, and drove in three runs to lead the Vikings past the Mustangs in the opener, 9-1. Megan Faris, Kristin Nagle, Tammy Nielsen, Katie Kimball, and Jen Jarding all hit doubles. Jamie Dobie was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Amy Klyse (20-7) pitched a two-hitter, did not issue a walk, and struck out six.

Robyn Beske and Nagle each went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Vikings to a 10-4 win in the night cap. Foth doubled for the 13th time this season. Nielsen (16-6) worked 5 1/3 innings for the win. She posted four strikeouts.

TAMMY NIELSEN has been selected North Central Conference pitcher of the week for the second time this season. The freshman right-hander from Fremont, Neb., posted a 5-0 record, yielded four earned runs, and struck out 45 batters in 39 2/3 innings.

HEAD COACH Sandy Jerstad (St. Olaf '66) begins her 26th season at the Vikings' helm. She has compiled a career record of 918-320-2. Her teams have won eight North Central Conference titles, competed in 11 NCAA Division II region tournaments, and won the national title in 1991. Her teams have won 30 or more games each of the last 17 seasons. In 1998 she was named College Women's Coach of the Year by the South Dakota Sportswriters' Association.

With her 918 wins, Jerstad is in second place on the NCAA's all-divisions career softball coaching chart.

AUGUSTANA'S assistant coaches are Jeff Glackler and Jessica Mathys.
