VIKING BASEBALL 2002

AUGUSTANA (15-14, 5-3 NCC) is on the road Tuesday, April 16, to play the University of Nebraska-Omaha (18-11, 6-2). The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Sandlot Ridge.

LAST WEEKEND the Vikings won three games of a four-game series with South Dakota State University (12-14, 4-4).

Augie survived a 15-hit assault by the Jackrabbits to win the first game played Saturday at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, 7-6. Augie secured the win on Phil Lang's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lang also cracked a two-run double to finish the game with four RBI. Ryan Dunlavey was 2-for-2 with a single and double, while Scott Harden smacked a solo home run. Kevin Wiessner contributed a double.

The Vikings overcame a three-run first inning by the Jacks to win the second game, 6-3. Andy Salmela hit two home runs for the hosts and drove in five runs. Owen Hoegh went the distance for the Vikings. Hoegh, 4-0 for the season, struck out five, walked one, and retired the last 13 batters.

The series shifted to Bob Shelden Field in Brookings, S.D., for a twin bill Sunday. SDSU spotted Augie a 5-0 lead and came back to post a 10-5 win in the opener. Dunlavey hit a home run, Salmela was 2-for-2 with a double, and Wiessner went 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings.

Augustana out hit the Jacks 17-14 and won the second game, 15-14. Each team logged five home runs, but it was Lang's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning that sealed the win for the Vikings. Doug Groebner and Dan Allard each had a three-run homer, Wiessner a two-run shot, and Sam Everson and Dunlavey had solo blasts for Augie. Groebner and Harden each had a double.
