VIKING BASEBALL 2002
AUGUSTANA (18-17, 8-4 NCC) is scheduled to play Mount Marty College
in non-conference action today. Play begins at 3:00 p.m. in Yankton,
S.D.
THE VIKINGS swept a North Central Conference doubleheader with
North Dakota State University Monday in Fargo, N.D. The games were
originally scheduled to be played Sunday.
Freshman right-hander Ben Iverson (2-0) tossed a two-hitter and
shut out the Bison, 2-0, in the opener. Chris Volkmann and Ryan
Perreault each had a single for NDSU. Iverson registered six strikeouts
and walked four. He did not allow a hit until the seventh inning
and at one point had retired 11 consecutive batters. Freshman infielder
Sam Iverson was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI for the Vikings. He
also scored a run.
Augie scored three runs each in the first and second innings and
held on for a 6-5 win in the second game. Everson stroked a two-run
single in the first inning for the Vikings, and Brad Bornhorst ripped
a three-run double in the second. Bornhorst was 2-for-3 with a pair
of doubles. Doug Groebner pitched the first 4 1/3 innings, while
Eric Kerkvliet worked the final 2 2/3 and yielded just one hit.

DOUG GROEBNER has set the Augustana career record for runs scored
with 146.
Brad Bornhorst has three home runs this season and now holds the
Augustana career record with 23. He also holds the school record
for RBI with 132.
SENIOR infielder Andy Salmela continues to lead Augie hitters
with a .414 average. He also leads the team in hits (46), doubles
(12), home runs (5) and RBIs (32). The Vikings are hitting .283
as a team.

JEFF HOLM is in his first year as Augustana’s head coach. He succeeds
Brett McCabe, who resigned in August, 2001, to accept an assistant
coaching position at the University of Kanas.
Holm, a native of Brookings, S.D., was the head baseball coach
and a member of the Admission Office recruiting staff at Millikin
University in Decatur, Ill., for three years. He led Millikin to
back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2000 and 2001, and was named Coach
of the Year in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
He played baseball at Minnesota State University, Mankato and later
taught and coached in Watertown, S.D. He completed his master’s
degree at South Dakota State University in 1997, and served as an
assistant coach at SDSU in 1997 and 1998.
