VIKING BASEBALL 2002

AUGUSTANA (19-17, 8-4 NCC) is scheduled to play the University of Minnesota-Morris in non-conference action today beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Ronken Field.

SENIOR infielder Andy Salmela went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Ryan Dunlavey had two hits and scored two runs to lead Augustana past Mount Marty College, 4-1, in non-conference play Tuesday in Yankton, S.D. Sam Everson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. The host Lancers were outhit by the Vikings, 10-9. Jeff Heinrich (3-3) picked up the win for Augie. He worked the first five innings, yielded six hits, did not walk a batter, and recorded one strikeout.

DOUG GROEBNER has set the Augustana career record for runs scored with 147.

Brad Bornhorst has three home runs this season and now holds the Augustana career record with 23. He also holds the school record for RBI with 132.

SENIOR infielder Andy Salmela continues to lead Augie hitters with a .422 average. He also leads the team in hits (49), doubles (12), home runs (5) and RBIs (34). The Vikings are hitting .283 as a team.

JEFF HOLM is in his first year as Augustana’s head coach. He succeeds Brett McCabe, who resigned in August, 2001, to accept an assistant coaching position at the University of Kanas.

Holm, a native of Brookings, S.D., was the head baseball coach and a member of the Admission Office recruiting staff at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., for three years. He led Millikin to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2000 and 2001, and was named Coach of the Year in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. He played baseball at Minnesota State University, Mankato and later taught and coached in Watertown, S.D. He completed his master’s degree at South Dakota State University in 1997, and served as an assistant coach at SDSU in 1997 and 1998.

VIKING assistant coaches for the 2002 season are Matt Schuldt, Brian Hunt, and Jason Mathys.
