VIKING BASEBALL 2002
AUGUSTANA (22-20, 9-7 NCC) heads to Marshall, Minn., Wednesday,
May 1, to play Southwest State University (22-25)
in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:30
p.m.
THE VIKINGS were in Greeley, Colo., last weekend where
they lost three of four North Central Conference games
to the University of Northern Colorado Bears (18-24,
9-7).
Augie won the first game of the series on Saturday,
6-4, behind senior pitcher Dan Allard (4-5). The right-hander
from Bloomington, Minn., went the distance. He gave
up seven hits, struck out four, and walked three.
The Vikings scored five runs in the seventh inning
on just one hit, Phil Lang's RBI single. UNC pitchers
walked four Augie batters and hit two others. The
Bears also had two fielding errors. Lang and Brad
Bornhorst each went 2-for-4.
UNC won the second game, 4-2. It was the first loss
of the season for Augie pitcher Owen Hoegh (5-1).
Hoegh gave up seven hits, walked two, and struck out
three while going the distance. Sam Everson was 2-for-4
with a pair of doubles. Ryan Dunlavey also doubled.
UNC won the opener on Sunday, 9-6, scoring five runs
in the last inning. Augustana stranded 13 runners.
Andy Salmela, Everson, Kevin Wiessner, and Lang all
smashed doubles for the Vikings. Allard was 2-for-3
with two RBI. Lang was 3-for-4, and Everson 2-for-3.
The Bears won the night cap, 15-14, as each team pounded
out 17 hits. Salmela was was 4-for-6 with a pair of
doubles and two RBI. Dunlavey was 2-for-6 with two
doubles and four RBI. Scott Harden was 4-for-4 with
a home run, double and two RBI.

THE
VIKINGS' Owen Hoegh has set a school record for strikeouts
in a season with 55.
Doug Groebner has set the Augustana career record
for runs scored with 152.
Andy Salmela has tied the Augustana career record
for doubles with 39. He owns the career record for
RBIs with 140. He has 177 hits, four shy of the career
record set by Jason Lloyd in 1990-93.
The Vikings have tied the school record for most NCC
wins in a season with nine.

JEFF HOLM is in his first year as Augustanaís head coach. He succeeds
Brett McCabe, who resigned in August, 2001, to accept an assistant
coaching position at the University of Kanas.
Holm, a native of Brookings, S.D., was the head baseball coach
and a member of the Admission Office recruiting staff at Millikin
University in Decatur, Ill., for three years. He led Millikin to
back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2000 and 2001, and was named Coach
of the Year in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
He played baseball at Minnesota State University, Mankato and later
taught and coached in Watertown, S.D. He completed his masterís
degree at South Dakota State University in 1997, and served as an
assistant coach at SDSU in 1997 and 1998.
VIKING assistant coaches for the 2002 season are Matt Schuldt,
