AUGUSTANA SOFTBALL

AUGUSTANA is the fifth seed in the North Central Region Tournament to be held in Fargo, N.D., May 9-12.

The opening session will be held Thursday, May 9, at the Ellig Sports Complex. The championship game of the double elimination tournament is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Sunday, May 12.

The Vikings are making their 15th appearance in regional play and bring a 32-27 post-season record to this weekend's tournament. Augie won the Division II crown in 1991.

North Central Conference champion North Dakota State University (40-7) is the host and top seed. The University of Nebraska-Omaha (44-8), the defending national champion, is the second seed. The University of Minnesota-Duluth (34-8) is seeded third, St. Cloud State University (40-11) fourth, and Truman State University (31-17) sixth.

Thursday's first round pairings have NDSU playing Truman State, UNO playing Augie, and Duluth playing Saint Cloud State.

The North Central Region winner plays the winner of the West Region in the second game of the national tournament at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va., on Thursday, May 16.

THE VIKINGS (48-16) lost to North Dakota State, 2-1, in 11 innings, in the championship game of the North Central Conference tournament last weekend in Grand Forks, N.D. Molly Pufall's homer in the 11th clinched the win for NDSU, the tournament's No. 1 seed.

The Vikings had eight hits to six for the Bison and left a dozen runners stranded on base. Amy Klyse (27-9) went the distance for the Vikings. She struck out 12 and walked one. Gian Hill was 3-for-5, while Jen Jarding doubled and drove in Augie's lone run.

Tammy Nielsen (21-7) tossed a three-hitter and struck out 12 as Augie defeated Minnesota State University, Mankato, in the first round, 5-1. Tessa Foth was 1-for-2 with a double and RBI. Julie Koenigs was 1-for-3 and scored two runs.

Klyse limited defending champion University of Nebraska-Omaha to three hits and shutout the Mavericks, 2-0. Foth and Megan Faris each went 2-for-3 with an RBI apiece.

Robyn Beske's single to left field scored Jarding with the winning run as Augie defeated NDSU, 6-5, in eight innings. The Vikings collected 13 hits led by Foth's three-run homer in the second inning. Kristin Nagle hit a two-run shot in the first. Klyse went the distance for the win, holding the Bison to four hits and striking out nine.

NDSU bounced back to beat Augie, 4-1, and force a second championship game. The Vikings had 10 hits, double that of the Bison, but left 10 runners stranded. Nielsen and Hill had two hits each, while Beske and Koenigs each doubled.
