VIKING BASEBALL 2002

AUGUSTANA (24-20, 9-7 NCC) hosts Minnesota State University, Mankato (23-13, 10-6) and St. Cloud State University (13-22, 3-11) in a crucial four-game series this weekend.

The series opens Friday, May 3, with Mankato visiting Ronken Field. The first game of the doubleheader starts at 2:00 p.m. Mankato is the defending conference champion.

Augie hosts St. Cloud on Saturday, May 4, with the first game of the twin bill set to begin at 1:00 p.m.

This is the final week of North Central Conference play. The top four teams qualify for the conference tournament May 9-11, to be held at the site of the regular season champion.

THE VIKINGS' Owen Hoegh has set a school record for strikeouts in a season with 55.

Doug Groebner has set the Augustana career record for runs scored with 153.

Andy Salmela has set the Augustana career record for doubles with 40. He owns the career record for RBIs with 141. He has 180 hits, one shy of the career record set by Jason Lloyd in 1990-93.

The Vikings have tied the school record for most NCC wins in a season with nine.

AUGUSTANA swept a non-conference doubleheader from Southwest State University Wednesday in Marshall, Minn.

Jeremy Schultz (2-3) yielded five hits, walked two batters, and struck out three in going the distance for a 7-2 win in the opener. Ryan Dunlavey went 3-for-3 with two RBI. He scored three times. Brad Bornhorst cranked his fourth home run of the season and Andy Salmela recorded his 17th double.

Tim DeBoer (1-1) tossed a three-hitter and used just 78 pitches to down the Mustangs in the nightcap, 3-1. The Vikings scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning. Dan Allard went 2-for-3.

JEFF HOLM is in his first year as AugustanaĖs head coach. He succeeds Brett McCabe, who resigned in August, 2001, to accept an assistant coaching position at the University of Kanas.

Holm, a native of Brookings, S.D., was the head baseball coach and a member of the Admission Office recruiting staff at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., for three years. He led Millikin to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2000 and 2001, and was named Coach of the Year in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. He played baseball at Minnesota State University, Mankato and later taught and coached in Watertown, S.D. He completed his masterĖs degree at South Dakota State University in 1997, and served as an assistant coach at SDSU in 1997 and 1998.
